2024 Lexus GX Sets a New Standard : Innovative Design, Impeccable Performance

The Lexus GX, the company’s mid-sized off-road SUV, has long been due for a redesign, which will finally occur for the 2024 model year. Riding on an entirely new platform with an upgraded powertrain and a slew of more modern technologies, the new GX550’s tough exterior is about the only thing that distinguishes it from its antiquated predecessor. The new model’s boxy, Land Cruiser-inspired appearance appears to be built to last—which is excellent given the GX’s history of long product cycles.

The 2024 GX550 is built on the same body-on-frame construction as the Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Tundra. It will be offered with a twin-turbo V-6 powertrain—with and without hybrid. assist—rather than the V-8 of the previous generation. It sits in the Lexus SUV series between its flagship LX luxury off-roader & the TX SUV, which is similarly in size but prioritizes interior room and on-road finesse.

2024 Lexus GX : Pricing

The 2024 Lexus GX starts at $64,250 and ranges up to $81,250, depending on specification and extras. The GX has two their personalities: luxury on-roader and trail-blazing off-roader. We recommend the Luxury trim for buyers who intend to spend the majority of their time on the road, as it upgrades the GX550’s interior with a variety of Semi-aniline leather upholstery, 10-way adjustable front seats with massage, heat, and ventilation, LED door sill plates, and second-row window blinds are all desirable amenities.

It also features larger 22-inch wheels that better fit the GX’s spacious wheel wells, giving it a more premium appearance. For the same price, the Overtrail+ trim provides a more rugged appearance and improved off-road performance, but it foregoes the GX’s third row of seats and several of the luxury items mentioned above. However, if you’re planning an outdoor adventure, it’s something to consider.

2024 Lexus GX : Size and Specifications

The 2024 Lexus GX comes in six different trim levels: Premium, Luxury, and Overtrail, each with a “+” version. The coolest model is the Overtrail, which has aggressive wheels, fender flares, and off-road accessories. Others can upgrade to third-row seats with a prismatic panoramic sunroof. However, the off-road trim is not required to leave the paved surface. Putting decent wheels and knobby tires on any new GX would increase its off-road performance significantly.

2024 Lexus GX Size and Specifications

The GX is 197.05 inches (approximately 16.4 feet) long, nearly the same of the brand-new Land Rover Defender 110 and seven inches longer than a G-Wagen. For reference, an ancient third-generation 4Runner is roughly a foot and a half shorter, while the last-generation GX was only about five inches shorter.

Curb weight is roughly 5,700 pounds, slightly more than the mentioned before Defender 110. The engine is a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6, which produces 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque between 2,000 and 3,600 rpm. The 0-60 mph pace is 6.5 seconds, and it is rated to tow 8,000 pounds. Fuel efficiency is 17 mpg in mixed driving, 15 mpg in the city, and 21 mpg on the highway, which is reasonable given the other specifications. Some test pilots claimed to get 25 mpg out of the vehicle on 45-mph side streets, which I suppose is doable if you get lucky with traffic lights and barely breathe on the gas pedal.

2024 Lexus GX : Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The GX550 comes equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine. The blown V-6 produces 349 horsepower, more than the previous model GX’s V-8. A 10-speed automatic is also standard, and all variants include four-wheel drive.

The Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims include more off-road features than the basic trims, such as 18-inch wheels with 33-inch All-Terrain tires, an aluminum skid plate, and an adaptive suspension system with more wheel articulation, a crawl-control feature, and selectable drive modes for different terrain. On the road, performance is ample, and the GX550 feels quick off the line. The ride is firm, especially on the available larger wheels. The steering is precise, and the GX handles well for a large, boxy SUV, but the Lexus really shines off-road.

Outward visibility is high, which is particularly useful for traversing narrow trails. During our initial test drive of the GX550, we got the opportunity to experience the Overtrail model’s superior off-road technology and were impressed. The transfer case allows the driver to pick the low-range gearset without locking the center differential, resulting in a tighter turning radius. The Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) allows you to disconnect the front or rear anti-roll bars separately to improve stability and eliminate head-toss.

2024 Lexus GX : Times from 0 to 60 mph

At our test track, the GX550 Premium reached 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. That’s a full second faster than the previous-generation GX on our circuit.

Despite its rough exterior, the GX has plush interiors. Faux- or genuine-leather upholstery is offered in a number of hues, with Overtrail models featuring faux-suede details in a dark green hue. Premium and Luxury trims have three rows of seats, with room for up to seven with the standard second-row bench; a pair of captain’s chairs is available, reducing seating capacity to six. The Overtrail variants have only two rows of chairs and can accommodate up to five people. The GX’s third row features power controls. Optional accessories include a chilled storage bin, a head-up display, and a digital key fob.
